I saw a PBS show recently that made me want to thank Dr. MacCready and all the people working with him for all of the wonderful contributions to human knowledge that have accumulated from all your efforts.
The show featured a comment about an AeroVironment researcher’s recent discovery that soaring birds are able to generate rotational thrust for flat turning by using their wingtip feathers. This amazed me because I had heard Dr. MacCready speak at Cal Poly Pomona back in the 1984 time frame at an AIAA sponsored event about ultralight aircraft. Dr. MacCready had commented about his early experiences watching birds fly and calculating efficiency of their lift to drag ratios from the time taken for a 360 degree turn. His calculations indicated a very high efficiency and he stated his continuing curiosity in what the answer to this puzzle might be. All these years later, out comes the answer revealing an amazing technology heretofore unknown.
Thank you all for your amazing work and the encouragement you are to us all to pursue amazing things and that these things can be accomplished.
